Welcome to eejits-online and the collection o' curious creatures.
Let me try to explain what this is all about.....!
|
What's this website all about then.....?
eejits-online is filled to the brim with a curious collection o'
creatures, all created by artist George Mackay. Living in the Highlands
at the very top of Scotland, (not far from John O' Groats), I see weird
and wonderful creatures and people everyday. I'm inspired by those
around me and have done my best to capture their characters here in the
website's gallery for each and every one of you to enjoy.
Browse through the hundreds of unique and varied eejits in the gallery.
Once you've sated your curiosity for cartoon creatures, you can, if you
so wish, leave a comment or two in our
eejits Forum or maybe download a free colouring-in page or
desktop wallpaper (from the 'Extras'
section) or even contact me by e-mail
to tell me how much you've loved the site (or even if you haven't)! If
you have loved the eejits, there is a great
book featuring even more curious creatures (plus lots more)
for you to buy (and in doing so help support this artist and his
horde o' eejits!)
All in all, I hope you have fun and this wee corner of the web brightens
up your day a little! |

So what is an eejit.....?
An eejit is an idiot, a fool, a gormless ignoramus. An eejit is a
creature who doesn’t know any better.
Born in the Highlands of Scotland, these weird and wonderful creatures
are even rarer than the famous haggis. Due to their incredibly stupid
nature and natural curiosity, they have now been collected together for
their own safety. A curious collection of creatures, a menagerie of
misfortunate misfits gathered together for the entire world to see.
They were starting to take up space in my house, so it was
either I charged them rent or they went out in the world. Needless to
say, they never paid me a penny......
A new eejit makes an appearance every Sunday (and
occasionally more often if I'm overrun).

Why the name 'eejits'.....?
eejits is a
Scottish term for an idiot, fool or bampot and seeing as I am from (you guessed it....)
Scotland, it's a term I use quite a lot. It seems that more often than not I'm surrounded
by them (present company excluded, of course). When I first started drawing these
creatures, the more I had drawn the more the collection looked like a bunch o' eejits. Hence the name has forever been attached
to this project o' mine.

How did it all start.....?
eejits was first started in 2005 after an experiment in digital
colouring. I needed to try different colouring techniques out so needed
something to colour. So I drew a weird wee creature and started on that.
I kept practicing and as my drawings took shape and I created more
creatures, the more and more that I looked at them, the more gormless
they looked. Together they looked liked a bunch of idiots, so they
became eejits. 'eejits' was a term that I used on a near daily basis so
it was natural for me. Doesn’t really say a lot for the people around
me!
After I had been showing my new creations around the internet, people
kept asking me about them and what each individual eejit was called. I
hadn’t given any of them names. I didn’t want to call them ‘Bob’ or
‘Steve’ or something boring (sorry Bob & Steve). eejits needed something
different. When looking at the collection all together, it had dawned on
me that they had evolved into the species ‘eejitus’ Hence the faux-Latin
names have been forever attached to the collection.

So how do you create all these creatures.....?
Mainly, paper, pencils and processors mixed with a
little bit o' inspiration, frustration and stupidity.
Paper gets drawn on with pencil. Pencil gets set on table.
Paper gets crumpled up and thrown in the nearest bin. Repeat until a design for an eejit is good. Do not throw in bin.
That's my general drawing practice. But once I've completed
that ritual, it's into the scanner and then on to Paint Shop Pro for a
bit o' computer fiddling. All the 'inking' and colouring is done within PSP. After a wee
while the newly born eejit is ready to be
displayed to the world. Conception to birth usually takes between 3 and 4 hours, depending
on my mood and what I want to achieve. It may not sound like it, but I do actually enjoy
the process (otherwise, what would be the point?).
Commissions tend to take a wee bit longer as people are paying good
cold 'ard cash for a unique creature or to have themselves (or someone
they know) turned into an eejit.
